Actually the editors are shooting for an audience of studio engineers, musicians, technophiles, and audio geeks, but all the content, even the ads can benefit the voice actor as well.

The April Edition of EQ has articles on NAMM (Nat’l Assoc. of Music Merchants), with generous mention of all the latest iPad apps being developed for audio.  There’s an excellent article on frequency and mic polar patterns…tips for using  Ableton Live software, and ways to improve your final mixes.

Spend a couple of  minutes looking around, and I’ll bet you’ll end up staying longer than you thought you would.

Forget that even reading the ads is an education.

The coolness of this online flip-the-page digital magazine format alone is reason enough to take a moment and visit.

EQ’s sweet-spot target audience is musicians, studio engineers, audio engineers, and audiophiles, but any voice-actor perusing the pages will find plenty of pertinent articles, tips, and yes, even ads that will grow your understanding of audio esoterica.

The Dec EQ magazine issue is out, and in this month’s edition: Studio Gifts for Gear Geeks, and an article on PreSonus Studio One Pro…but forget all that.  As I’ve said before, some of the best content in the magazine comes in the ads.  Persusing the virtual pages (they turn with a sound just like a real magazine), I found at least 4 apps for the iPhone causes it to double as a sound processor of some sort, and I also found an ad for this bad boy:

The SESCOM IL-19, billed as an inline professional audio hum eliminator.  Is this something a VO can use in their audio-chain?  I don’t know, but it might be worth a look.

See?  You find stuff in this magazine that kinda keeps you on the learning edge.  No?

The target readership includes audio engineers, musicians, studio techs, and audiophiles…but so much of what is discussed…even the ads…land quite so close to the heart of a voice talent, that I believe each month’s digital edition is a gold mine.

You’ll find product reviews for hardware, mics, software, pre-amps, and peripherals, as well as tutorials for audio editing, and a whole lot more.

Plus this particular online digital form of the magazine is one of the slickest interfaces I’ve seen to browse a magazine, and still feel like you’re turning pages.

Not only is it fun to flip the virtual pages, but the content itself is top-notch.  Sure, it’s mostly written for people who actually know what VST stands for, and can describe the difference in polarity fields for the various types of condenser mics…but for the rest of us, there is a lot left that’s actually quite applicable to our VO indutry.

This month, for instance…besides having a fetching picture of Cheryl Crow on the cover, you’ll find articles like:  ”Give Your Mixes More Headroom”, and “8 Questions That Can Save Your Sessions”.  The publication favors the music industry, but applies to us too.  Even the ads are great.

I’ve never seen as slick an online publication as this magazine…and that’s aside from all the kick-butt content it has.

EQ Magazine is for the audiophile, the studio engineer, the musician crazed by getting the perfect sound…so it leans in the direction of technical audio lingo…but the articles are spot-on.  This month: tips on using Pro-Tools 8, and Cakewalk Sonar 8.5, along with other great equipment critiques and even the ads are worth a gander.
