Studio Suit: Installed!

suitDan Lenard’s Studio Suit got its first install the other day.

Dan — The Home Studio Master — made the sojourn to Chicago in sub-zero temps to find his first victim, er, uh volunteer for the occasion.

I wrote about the Studio Suit just last week.  Dan wasn’t talking about it much ’cause he was wanting to get that first real-world application under his belt.  But I took the cue from his website, and so he shared with me some video he took of that install in a friend’s closet in Chicago…turning it from an echo chamber to a dead-space studio.

It only takes 3 minutes to watch this brief, instructive demonstration of the transformative power of the studio suit.  Be sure to slide the player control back ‘n’ forth to listen to the “before” and “after” sound.

Thanks, Dan!  Good luck with it!

Radio. From home?

Could it be that our colleagues on the radio airwaves are finally getting on board with the home studio thing?

I find it hard to believe this is anything new, but a “Radio World” website article from just a week ago profiles 3 broadcast talents who are doing it from home now as if it were something new.

The article comes complete with pics of their studios and a profile of their new-found life as non-commuters.

Check it out at: CALL IT HOME SWEET STUDIO

The Ewoks of EWABS

How could you not have already heard about EWABS?!  East West Audio Body Shop.  The announcements have popped up everywhere!

The pair behind EWABS is Dan Lenard and George Whittam….and both have been mounting an online full-court-press marketing and promotions campaign in the last week or more.

George Whittam

Most people familiar with the visible voice over community know of Dan and George.  Dan is the HOME STUDIO MASTER, and George is the master of ELDOREC  – Eldorado Recording Services. Dan brings common sense to, and removes the mystery from establishing your own home/private studio.  George came into most everyone’s view as Don La Fontaine’s technical wizard, and has since grown his expertise in all directions as an audio expert.

Can you imagine any two people more qualified to field YOUR questions about any and all home studio audio recording issues?!

Dan Lenard

I roomed with Dan at FaffCon, and we talked well into the night about his hopes and desires for this show.  Then last Sunday I spent some time on Skype with George as they were testing connections in advance of this inaugural weekly teleseminar.  I can tell you that George has incorporated a good bit of his own technical expertise in being able to carry off this show for all participants and the hosts.

Please make plans to attend the first show.  This Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 8:00PM EDT  5:00PM PST

Top 11 Recording Studio Construction Mistakes

This is a great article I found on the Recording Review Forum site.  Recording Review is a pretty good place to visit…often.

The article is written by Brandon Drury, and was posted just a couple of days ago.

Top 11 Recording Studio Construction Mistakes

A lot of sensible points here…well worth a read!

LifeHack VO

Somewhere along the line, someone introduced me to LifeHacker.com.

This site is like crack for me.

While the place decidedly errs on the side of hardware/software/web-tech stuff…it frequently branches out into equipment, lifestyle, and domestic products that are new, trendy, make-your-life-easier, or DIY.

One of the most recent entries is that of Jorge Velasco, who is an avid LifeHacker reader and voice actor.  I always enjoy lookin’ at other VO’s studio set-ups.  ‘No two alike.  It gives me ideas.

Check out the article in LifeHacker that shows Velasco’s studio.  Then…stay, kick the LifeHacker tires, mosey around the site a little…it’s very engaging.

Dog and Pony

There are a  number of good production studios here in Las Vegas.

Some are elegant…others carry more of a “workshop” air.  Some do more video…others more audio.  But the coolest one in town is Dog & Pony Studio.

John McClain is THE guy.  Along with his team, they do some top shelf stuff…more and more video it seems, but audio has always been his bailiwick, too.

McClain’s most recent newsletter came out, and it has some worthy links worth visiting.  Really.  It’s a hoot to read.

Oh, and John is always looking for good talent.

Please, take a moment to check out the Dog & Pony Show newsletter.

Dan the Studio Man

Honestly, you need your own studio to make it in the VO world of today.

So…that means you need to set aside some space, some equipment, a computer, some software and a mic.  A guy/gal could get carried away with all that…or not.  To some it’s daunting.  Others never stop…acquiring and buying and building and hoarding and never getting around to the work of voicing.

Well, it’s NOT hard, it SHOULDN’T have to be expensive, and it DOESN’T have to be complex.

Dan Lenard could tell you that.  He could tell you that better than anybody.  He does, and he will.

“The Home Studio Master” is hosting East Coast and West Coast seminars.  If this is a challenge for you, you couldn’t find a better coach.  Below is the ad…the links are not clickable.  But as you can see the East-Coast workshop is sponsored by VoiceOverXtra, and the West Coast workshop is at the SAG Foundation’s Don LaFontaine Voice Over Lab, and features the able partnership of George Whittam and his Eldorado Recording Services.

Nice going, Dan!

Recording Review

This is one of those industry newsletters I signed up for somewhere along the way, usually deleting or ignoring as I peruse my daily email:

RECORDING REVIEW

What caught my eye this time around is their comprehensive, state-by-state list of recording studios.  Click HERE.

Some of you may want to be listed there, and others may find a lead or two among the sites on the list.

Recording Review also hosts a forum.  That’s HERE.

Like the EQ online magazine I often support in my blog, Recording Review seems slanted towards the garage band, musician, or studio technician/producer.  But as you can see if you visit, a good many of their articles and posts could easily benefit a voice actor (microphones, software, studio construction, etc.)

RR is also now offering a free publication designed to help you set up a home studio. HERE.  I think it’s a hook to get you to buy something, but the free download may be worth it alone.  Please let me know if your experience is negative (or positive for that matter).

Worth a look!

Straight Talk on Studios

danlenard2 No it doesn’t have to be complicated, and no it doesn’t have to be expensive to build a quality VO recording studio.

Despite what all the equipment vendors want to tell you, it’s not Rocket Surgery to build a home studio.

Dan Lenard would tell you that.  He WILL tell you that, if you join the teleseminar being hosted by VoiceOverXtra.

What a combination!  The accessability and support of VoiceOverXtra, and the common sense practicality of home-studio guru Dan Lenard!  What’s not to like??!!

Better get signed up fast, though, it starts Tuesday.  Oh, and BTW, this is a steal at the price they’re offering!
