Fixing Your Demos on the “New” LinkedIn

linkedin-logoMost of you know I’m a big LinkedIn fan.  Of all the social networks, LinkedIn offers the most rich feature set for searching and researching your business prospects.  Oh, and they’ve got hundreds of millions of members, too.  ;-}

One of the nice things about LinkedIn (until now) was the association it had with Box.net.  Using the Box.net LinkedIn “app”, you could store your Demos on Box, and they would appear in your LinkedIn profile.

Not any more.

LinkedIn is rolling out a  major overhaul of its interface…both cosmetically, and under the hood.  Gone is the Box.net app, and your demos.

Luckily, LinkedIn had the foresight to offer a really decent alternative, and I’ve got the links to show you how to do it.  By the way, my thanks to Tom Dheere for bringing this to my attention.  Seeking an answer to his question of how to replace the Box.net demos led me to finding the work-around.

LinkedIn now lets you post links to all sorts of media right in your profile.  To be able to post your demos, then on your LinkedIn site, you’ll have to have your soundfiles stored in an online service like AudioBoo or SoundCloud.  Actually LinkedIn accepts many more audio, video, image and presentation files than ever before.  Go to their PROFILE MEDIA LINK PROVIDERS page to see all the media they accept.

Got it?

OK, now go to LinkedIn’s page explaining how to add your files to your profile: ADDING MEDIA LINKS ON YOUR PROFILEA crucial point here, is that you can only add these media links to the following sections of your profile: Summary, Education, Experience.

It works like a charm, and I’m not so sure it isn’t better than the Box.net arrangement.

Below is a screen capture of my demos, now added to the “Summary” section of my profile.

New…More Social SoundCloud

Everybody’s doing it.  EVERY internet presence is being leveraged into any and all social networking opportunities.  SoundCloud too.

Everybody’s favorite online audio storage and sharing site adds a new slick user interface, improved search, and the ability to repost.  You an also curate a collection, and engage in continuous play of your selections.

The site has a nicely refurbished look that still has the unmistakable feel of being SoundCloud.  There are attendant changes in the iOS and Android apps with this roll-out as well.

See SoundCloud’s blog for the full details…along with some 469 comments.

While you’re at it, listen to the collage of voice-over contributions to Christmas put together by Terry Daniel on HIS SoundCloud site:
Terry Daniel’s Third Annual Voice Talent Holiday Greeting.

And in the spirit of sharing from the new SoundCloud…here it is without having to leave my blog!

SoundCloud & Pinterest

My gratitude to voice actor Karen Commins for her tip that forms the basis of today’s blog.

Despite the points I made in my previous article on “A VO’s Place on Pinterest“, Karen was still skeptical about the value in this new Social Network for her VO business.  But upon further research she found the “hook” that brought her into the Pinterest fold.

Pinterest now accepts SoundCloud…and y’all are familiar with SoundCloud, right?  You should be.  It’s an awesome place to post, share, store, and play your audiofiles.

People, this could be big!

The two platforms working together makes Pinterest more than just place to look at pretty pictures of drapes, recipes, and shoes.  Karen says:  “…Within minutes of pinning a short story that I had posted last month on Soundcloud, I saw the number of plays increase!…”

Karen was kind enough to point me to this SoundCloud blog page that explains it all…including being able to post to Pinterest using the “Pin It” bookmarklet in your browser’s bookmarklet bar…or copy the URL of the sound you want to share onto the site.  Thanks, Karen!!!

Reading about the new Pinterest/SoundCloud integration also led me to SoundCloud’s NEXT SOUNDCLOUD beta project.  Apparently SoundCloud is on the move to be more social, easier to navigate, and more intuitively organized.

The Pinterest integration and the “Next” Soundcloud all bode well for voice-actors.  FaceBook has never made it particularly easy to post audio on their network.  You can post links to audio on Twitter, but this new development adds a distinct visual element to a soundfile that makes it much easier to bring attention to your audio work on a social media platform.

The Next SoundCloud announcement allows you to sign-up for being part of their new roll-out…and if you look deeply enough, you’ll find mention of how to apply to be a SoundCloud “Fellow”, too…building a deeper community.
