VoiceBank v. Voice Registry

Are you clear on the difference between the two?

I really wasn’t sure, so I did a little digging.

VoiceBank.net and VoiceRegistry are run by the same people.

According to their website:  “The Voicebank.net system connects over 150 of the top voice over Talent Agencies to over 1600 Ad Agencies, Animation Houses and Production Houses around the world. “

And VoiceRegistry:  “The purpose of voiceregistry is to continually educate actors (novice to seasoned) about all aspects of the voice over industry and provide actors, when ready, with an opportunity to seek representation or additional representationy.”

All cleared up?  Yeah, me neither.

This whole mental exercise started when my fellow Vegas VO bud William Brady told me that he signed up for VoiceRegistry and was attending the “weekend workouts”.  He even got some personal feedback from seasoned pro Bill Ratner.  Bill talks about it in his blog.  Bill says he was told that since he didn’t have agency representation yet, he could not be listed on VoiceBank, but could sign-up on VoiceRegistry.  Further, that if he participated in the workouts, he could end up being scouted by the agents.

All this got me to thinking.  I keep running into VoiceBank at Faffcon Unconferences, ’cause they’re the major sponsor.  Amber Dahlin of VoiceBank is wonderful, and The VoiceBank Blog is mandatory reading.

But being a true lunkhead…I still wasn’t clicking on what was the reason for the two sites.  I’m listed on VoiceBank through my agent, but I can’t really log onto the site.  Wassup with that?

So, I wrote them and asked.  Chris Miyamoto of  ‘support’ replied:

“Voiceregistry is the site specifically for actors and gives platinum members access to the weekend workout.

Voicebank is designed more for business to business transactions, but actors can take advantage of getting more exposure by subscribing to the red star feature. The red star feature is a service that we administer from our end and does not use a login by clients. It simply links your name to a designated website of your choice and helps to give added internet exposure.

An actor can only login to Voicebank if they would like to subscribe to the digital delivery services we offer. This delivery service does not give access to projects. It is strictly a service that will allow you to upload a file and email a link out that will connect to your upload. Most actors who need this service use it to send extra large files (like video or super high quality audio files). I think of it as being a secure ftp service on steroids.

Since the 2 sites (Voicebank and Voiceregistry) are totally different and they each need their own login. ”
If you have any other questions, please feel free to email or call us. These are great questions, and we are working to clarify the two site’s services better for our users.

OK, that helps…I think I have it figured out now.  If you still need answers, I must say the people are VoiceBank are very helpful.  If you are already listed with VoiceBank, you might also consider paying extra for the red star next to your name that links casting agents directly to your website.

The Single Most Important…

…skill you’ll ever need to be more organized.

To save time and be timely.

To express yourself adequately.

To succeed at Social Media.

To double or triple production.

I’ve blogged about this skill before, but it soooo bears repeating.  It’s the answer I give people when they ask me how I get it all done, and when I sleep.

With this skill, I’m a whiz at Social Media.  The king of newsletters.  A master of blogging.

Touch typing.  Keyboarding.  Call it what you will…but it’s the technique of being able to strike the keys on your keyboard without having to look.

Back in Gus Grissom’s typing class in Greenville, IL in 1967, we practiced on manual ROYAL typewriters.  But I paid atttention, and through all the iterations of keyboards, and through all the jobs I’ve done, I kept up my practice.  I can clearly say there’s not ONE single more important skill I’ve learned in my life than touch typing.  Now I do 100w/m easily.

I’m aghast at all the journalists I’ve run across in my years in TV news who don’t touch type.  It’s like a bricklayer who spreads cement with his hands instead of a trowel…an accountant who uses paper and pencil instead of QuickBooks.  I even met a producer once who did the hunt ‘n’ peck method with one hand.  They all think smugly that they’re pretty fast.  They aren’t.

And today, it’s so easy to get training…you can do it yourself with inexpensive software, or with a guide on the internet.

In case you haven’t noticed, Social Media has forced us all to write a lot more than we ever had to before…and it’s all input on a keyboard.  Wouldn’t you love to double or triple your written output?  Wouldn’t it be great to slam out a 140 character response in 10 seconds?

But Dave…you say… Nuance makes such great voice-recognition software these days, that you don’t really need to know how to type…just dictate!  True, but try dictating a personal letter in the middle of a busy office with ears listening all around.  It’s like the difference between texting and talking on the phone.  One is a lot more private than the other.

SmartPhones and Tablets?  You don’t have to settle for the little keyboards on the screen…get a blue-tooth keyboard for either.  I do… and it works great, especially for texting.

Think this doesn’t relate to voice over at all?  Ha!  Imagine how many more words you can fit into a follow-up newletter, blog, email, LinkedIn, or FaceBook post faster if you knew how to touch type.  Touch typing will at least double your efficiency.  Believe me.  It works!

“That’s VO” Deadline

Tuesday, several messages came through that I could not ignore.  They all pointed to That’s Voiceover.

The last time That’s Voiceover happened, a lot of people couldn’t stop talking about it.

But that was NYC, and…well…I couldn’t make it.  But the next That’s Voiceover is in Los Angeles, October 6th, 2011.  That’s a Thursday (seems like not so great scheduling)…and heretofore, I hadn’t considered the effort to go.  But through the unmistakable not-so-coincidental clues that knocked me up the side of the head Tuesday…I think I’d better go!

After all, this is one of the reasons I live in Las Vegas.  It’s easy to take advantage of the opportunities in one of the two top VO markets in the nation.  Apparently, this is a late-in-the-day event, and hey, I don’t have to be at work till 2pm the next day…perfect!

Here’s the final nail in the coffin for my needing to be there for this event.  One of the on-the-scene prizes is:  “Winner is awarded and actual, paid booking to provide voiceover announcing for an on-air TV promo for CBS KLAS, Las Vegas. The promo will be thereafter featured on ThatsVoiceover.com, accompanied by a press release and interview.”

That’s my TV station!!!  See what I mean about coincidence?

Today (and maybe tomorrow) is the last chance to take advantage of early-bird pricing.  Here’s a way to take another $25 off of THAT price.

Go to the AFTRA site promoting That’s Voiceover, and grab the special promotional code for the discount.  In fact, you can even buy your ticket through the AFTRA site.

That brings the price-of-admission down to $110.  Not bad!

Down to the final day!…and once you see the roster of personalities who are presenting at That’s Voiceover, I think you’ll agree it’s well worth the cost.

Super Socials!

Many of you know of the close connection this blog has to John Florian’s VoiceOverXtra site.  I’ve probably contributed 10 or 12 articles to his site of late.  John runs a hi-profile site.  VoiceOverXtra gets a lot of traffic, and has a lot of credibility in the Voice Over world.  Lately Florian has branched out…doing webinars that are quite engaging and worthwhile with some of the top contributors, trainers, and coaches in the business.

When John  approached me to join my VO friends Terry Daniel and Trish Basanyi in a 3-part webinar covering all aspects of Social Media, I jumped at the chance.

Terry Daniel and I presented a General Session seminar at VOICE2010 on the topic of Social Media, and earlier this year, Trish and I teamed up to present at FaffCon2 on the same topic.

I consider Terry and Trish to be my mentors and associates in this trending area of marketing potential.  They are both experts in Social Media, and I’ve learned tons from their daily approach.

Here’s how this triple-threat “Super Socials” set of webinars will break down:

Wednesday, August 17, Terry Daniel will explain the intricacies of FaceBook…no small feat as this platform continues to evolve.  It is the 800-lb-gorilla of Social Media, though, so it’s good we start here.  If you’re not on FaceBook with your VO marketing, you’re missing out.

Thursday, August 18th, Trish Basanyi steps into de-mystify Twitter.  I know of no other voice actor than Trish who’s translated her Twitter presence into more VO work.  Since this is at once a challenging and fruitful social networking platform, you’ll want to hear what Trish knows about it.

About a week later, Wednesday, August 24th, I close the gap with a wealth of information about the social media platforms that should round-out your VO marketing plan.  I’ll cover LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+ (a newcomer in Social Media), along with blogging and a few surprises.  I’ll also be conducting an engaging live interview with Zurek, the founder of VoiceOverUniverse…one of THE MOST succcessful VO forums of all time.

So there you go.  Who would want to miss all that?

You can attend all three for the reduced price of $99…or any one for $39.  But here’s the incentive to sign-up:  You are automatically enrolled in a drawing to have your tuition refunded if you spread the word, and then cc: John Florian with your message.

See all the details of this upcoming series of webinars.

I hope to see you on the call, I’ll be there for Terry and Trish’s presentations because I KNOW I’ll learn something.  I can promise you I”ll do my level best during my webinar to present material you’ve never heard before, and open your eyes to new possibilities for marketing your VO business in Social Media.

Please pass the word around, and possibly win a free pass to the webinar!

Poynting the Way

For the past week, I was at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.  It’s a center for journalistic studies with a rich history, and a proud tradition.

The week-long seminar I attended was titled: “Digital Strategies for Today’s Newsroom Managers”.  I’m not a newsroom manager, but MY newsroom manager keeps telling me I’m a leader in the newsroom…and they appreciate my interest in social media, so off to St. Petersburg I went.  Boy did I learn a lot!

Poynter 2011 (Dave, second row, 3rd from the left)

I learned that traditional media everywhere are struggling to discover what their role is in the new world of digital.  3-and-4 screen technology, cloud-computing, smartphone apps, dwindling print readership, blogging, paywalls, hyper-local coverage, and measuring audience were just some of the topics discussed.

I learned that newspaper readership is dropping, and TV viewers are defecting…that people want their news when they want it, and that they aren’t willing to wait till the morning edition of the newspaper comes out.  They aren’t even willing to wait until the 5, 6, or 11 o’clock news comes on.  I learned that CraigsList has killed newspapers’ most lucrative and dependable revenue stream, and that even loyal and middle-aged news viewers’ eyeballs are moving to FaceBook for their news.  I learned that the most likely platform for people to get their news in the near future is the smartphone.

That’s great, Dave…but what does this have to do with VO?   Well, last I heard some of the most lucrative jobs in voice-over came from TV and radio…both of which are besieged by the trends of our digital future.  When those jobs go away, so do lots of VO opportunities.

VO is, by design, woven into the fabric of popular media, and our fortunes are tied to TV and radio, and yes, even print.  That’s kinda crappy, ’cause we have little control over how those media establishments are reacting to the changes.  Some of our clients will survive, even thrive in the new world.  Others will go away.

If I may, let me just float 5 salient viewpoints that have relevance to what it is we voice actors do, and should keep doing if we expect to continue to be a part of the media world.

1)  Engagement This is a hugely important concept in the digital media world of the future.  In case you don’t know…Social Media is setting the pace on much of this, and social networking is NOTHING if it’s not about engagement.  Engaging the audience =attracting and holding fast to your viewers/listeners.  Continuing the conversation, responding, replying, and maintaining interest in the subject at hand.
FOR VO’s: What are you doing to engage your clients, your listeners, your agents, your coaches, your peers?  Did you answer that email, that comment, that question?

2) The Story continues No longer does ANYTHING disappear from public view anymore.  It’s all in the digital record.  The story lingers much longer than before, inviting comment and feedback.  There’s a never-ending shelf-life to digital data.
FOR VO’s:  Your first demo?  It’s out there.  That spot you did 3 years ago?  Is it still running?…and did they pay you for it?

3)  Content Counts This never changes.  In fact, if anything, the digital future demands even better content.  Do you write?  Are you a producer or director or coach?  Are you contributing mediocrity, or does your product have consistent quality?
FOR VO’s: Your input on scripts, your interpretation, your commitment to the client’s product makes a difference.  Make it better.

4) Excellence Building on point #3, the consumers of digital media don’t want a future where YouTube’s shaky videos and questionable value rule the world.  There IS a market for excellence.  The best of ANY market offering can command the best price.  A digital future is a quality future.
FOR VO’S:  Don’t think for a minute that you can “slide” on that read.  Hold your standards high, and impress your clients.  You’ll get more work in the long run.

5) Measurement Matters Digital products — by their very nature — lend themselves well to metrics.  “1′s” and “0′s” are easy to count, and there are more ways to count them than ever before.  Digital is not a platform that brooks sloppiness.  Media outlets of tomorrow CANNOT afford to ignore the numbers.
FOR VO’s: Do your bookkeeping.  Number your invoices.  Get a Google Analytics account. Check your traffic.  Count your visitors and backlinks.

Good Sound Advice

Dan Friedman was a hit at Faffcon2.

His friendly style, and masterful knowledge of audio production greatly benefitted all those attending.

Dan works at ProComm Voices…so his resume speaks for itself.

But Dan’s been busy authoring, too, and has a new book release.

This easy-to-read, 84-page guide explains the finer points of good audio in terms any VO could understand.

The book is SOUND ADVICE: VoiceOver from an Audio Engineer’s Perspective…and right now  Dan is offering a chance to win a copy of the book.

If technical audio-chain hardware/software issues are not your strong suit, Dan’s book will take away the mystery.

Nice work, Dan!

Beat the Noise

Michael Minetree is churnin’ out the videos these days.  I meant to get this particular video posted on my blog before I left for FaffCon. (this is why people ask me “When do you sleep?”).

Believe me, a week later it still offers plenty about how to eliminate noise in noisy environments as you use Sony’s Sound Forge!

Check it out, or any of the many other “Tips-Tricks-Advice” videos MineWurx studio is making available today.  When you view this video on his YouTube channel, simply look to the right column for related videos.

The Voice Over Coach – Sound Forge – Advanced 1 – Noise Reduction in Noisy Environments

Brain Up!

No, I didn’t have time to catch the live Teleseminar with Nancy Wolfson and Anna Vocino the other day, either.  I heard it was great. 75 min. lecture, 15 mins. Q&A.  Woot!

Luckily, like all the other Acting for Advertising seminars from the duo, this one is now downloadable for a most reasonable price on the Break Into Voiceover.com site.

And you know…right?…that Nancy is THE most sought-after voiceover coach on the planet, and there’s a reason why…right?  OK, good!   Call her…get on the schedule, and find out why it’s called “BrainTracksAudio”.

______________
Also, John Armstrong, Managing director at World Gaming Executives.com and Gamevoices asked me to post on the Voice-Over Friends FaceBook group the following message:  “…I’m looking for some video game voiceover people who might add their voices to the http://www.gamevoices.co.uk/ site with a short sound file…”

It’s already gotten some responses, but no reason why yours couldn’t still be one of ‘em.
______________

Finally, an ambitious website I found that compares voices against each other for similar jobs: Behindthevoiceactors.com.   The site covers most of the popular niches of work we’d all like to build our resume with.

The site claims to be: “… a community database of voice over actors for fans to learn and discuss voice acting about those already in the industry. Only its cranked up to give you a visual and audible experience of seeing images and listening to sound clips of the actors themselves of the character roles they play, rather than a typical credit list of text names.”

If nothing else, click the “commercials” tab at the top to listen to some of the top commercials on the air right now…and see what the people are doing who are getting the work!

Fraley Freebie

November 2008

Wanna get into audiobooks?  Pat Fraley’s a master at them…and lucky for us…he’s one of the top, if not THE top audiobook coach anywhere.  And not just Pat, but all the incredible talents, and producers, and first-rate narrators he always brings in to teach WITH him.

Pat’s weekend audiobook workshops “The Billion-dollar Read” are career-changers for the attendees.  You walk away with demos good enough to land you jobs, a head packed full of ideas for how to market yourself and enough talent-tips to chew on for years.  You’ve just met some of the top people in the business, and you’ve gained Pat as a mentor.

I speak from personal experience.  I completed his workshop in November of 2008, and I’m a working audiobook narrator, listed on Audible, APA, and currently working on two books, with several more on the horizon.

Pat’s approach is no-nonsense, although he has a lot of fun (always!) with his students and his teaching methods.

Please watch the following video Pat’s generously sharing everywhere.  It distills down his proven “Formula For Getting Audiobook Narration Work” to about a 15-minute video presentation with Pat himself narrating.  His workshops are always priced reasonably, but you won’t find a better value than these 15 minutes.

Thanks, Pat…!!
