Be Yourself

Ever since VOICE2010, and the wildly acclaimed presentation I did with Terry Daniel on Social Media for VO’s (I lied about the wild acclaim thing, BTW), I’ve had many questions about what a person should “DO” when they finally get somewhat established on these sites…like Twitter, FaceBook, and LinkedIn.

The answer — written succinctly — and explained better than I’ve seen anywhere, is summed-up in THIS article by @thatdamnredhead for Social Media Today.

She expands on everything I’ve tried to say over and over.

Social Media: Got Time?

36236699

.

At 3:54am PST, I ponder this issue.

How much more of my personal time can I afford to give over to Social Media?

That simple question begets a rash of other questions that belie the complexity of the issue.

  • First of all is the question: “Can I afford NOT to give that time, if I want a successful freelance Voiceover business under today’s new internet paradigm?”
  • Secondly: “Is it really a burden if I’m having fun?”
  • Thirdly: “Is it really a waste of time if it’s bringing me clients?”
  • Finally: “If I DO draw a line…WHERE do I draw the line?”

(There are even more caveats, but again, you have to draw the line somewhere.)

RETURN ON INVESTMENT

I’ve been especially pondering this issue on behalf of the upcoming attendees of June’s VOICE2010 conference in LA.  Along with voice-actor Terry Daniel, I’ll be expounding on the ROI of Social Media for VO’s in a morning general session, and I hope to have some darn good answers for people who paid good money to learn something.

‘Trouble is, Social Media is such a moving target these days.  There’s a lot of flailing around in a pushing-the-envelope environment that sees trial-and-error success and failure in weeks, days, sometimes even hours.

Yet, in this new frontier, there are gold mines to be found.  Luckily there are also volumes being written daily…mostly in the blogosphere…to help.

HERE is an extremely helpful, informative article entitled 10+ TIPS FOR USING TWITTER TO GROW YOUR FREELANCE BUSINESS.

And for those of you brave enough to take on Google’s latest Twitter challenge called BUZZ,  HERE is a primer for getting around, called HOW TO DO EVRYTHING IN GOOGLE BUZZ (INCLUDING TURN IT OFF).

Will you be there in June?  It really will be fun and worthwhile. I hope you try to make it.  See the registration site HERE.

All a-Buzz

Google continues to amaze.  After the many years experiencing Microsoft’s marketplace moves, I keep thinking there’s a catch…a string attached. Google is no Boy Scout, but it’s hard to argue with the value of all the free stuff they throw at you.

Lately, I find myself using the Google Chrome browser more and more for it’s speed, now I’m using it for the growing list of extensions, too.  So many of them, it’s starting to challenge the convenience of plug-ins offered by Mozilla.

For instance, there are 39 extensions alone association with Google Docs…every tweak imaginable.

There’s social networking extensions galore, an Arabic word-of-the-day extension, a “turn-off-the-lights” extension, SEO tools…OMG…anything.  Installation is so easy Harry Reid could do it, and it’s fast fast fast.

Extensions install on the toolbar of your Chrome browser, and make linking to things oh so much easier.

Click HERE to go to the Google extensions page, and click away!

But wait!…there’s more!

Google is apparently feeling the pinch of Twitter’s success, and has this week launched it’s answer:  BUZZ.

If you use Gmail, Google makes it ridiculously easy to launch into Buzz.  See the new line they’ve inserted under the “inbox” line on the left of your Gmail screen.

When you click the Buzz link, you’ll find that Google has already chosen some followers for you, and that means some others are already following you too.   The interface looks familiar to Twitter, and there are seamless links for following threads, answering, choosing new/more followers, and inviting others.  In short, it’s Goog-Twit, or said another way:  everything that Google Wave wanted to be, but fell short, somehow…mostly through a bad launch and an overly-complex interface.

If you DON’T see Buzz in Gmail, go HERE to install it.

I’m just not sure I need to get hooked on yet ANOTHER stream-of-consciousness, follow/follower internet social network.
