Faffers: Got Nuggets?

100 lucky voice talents just shared an incredible weekend at the high end of the voice-over experience.

Because they shared, we will all learn and grow.

I’ve been keeping track of tweets and FaceBook posts coming from many of the attendees, and you can find that on Storify.

I’m also sending out a personal request to any and all FaffCon attendees to visit the VOAToday.com site and offer just ONE “nugget” of information you learned in one of the sessions, that you’d be willing to share with the rest of us.

I don’t have any prize lined-up yet…we’ll see…but just do it out of the goodness of your heart, OK?  Let’s see how much info we can collect that will uplift the  whole business of voice-acting.

VOAT Prizes, FaffCon Rises

Who says not much goes on in the Voice Over world?  Things are popping like never before!

Today, about a-hundred FaffCon3 attendees begin arriving in Hershey, Pennsylvania for the third “unconference”…a voice-over event like no other!

Among the attendees at FaffCon are Anthony Gettig, voice actor, and winner of the Week-3 VOAToday prize package.  He wins a lifelong subscription to Voice123.com!…and a 10-ft mic cable compliments of SweetWater.

See the complete announcement of the winners of the week-3 VOAToday.com promotion.

If, like me, you are not able to attend FaffCon3, just set up a Twitter search in your favorite Twitter app (Seesmic, Tweetdeck) for the word “Faffcon”, and watch the info roll in.  I’m hoping most of the FaffCon attendees will be marking their posts with the #FaffCon hashtag, which will make it easier to track the info. Watch for blog posts, too on VoiceOverXtra, Bob Souer’s Blog, Rowell Gormon’s blog and others.

This should be one of the most edifying FaffCon sessions… 100 attending.  To see a whole list, and find out more about Faffcon in general, visit the FaffCon website.

Also, be ready for the announcement of the NEXT FaffCon.  FaffCon founder and sustainer, Amy Snively, I’m sure, has thought that far ahead.

Finally, FaffCon attendees are encouraged to visit the VOAToday site when you return home to share ONE NUGGET you learned at the unconference.  That will wrap-up the VOAToday promotion for September.  The final week’s winner will be announced next Friday, the 30th of September.

VO rocks!

FaffCon Fever

Hershey, Pennsylvania will never know what hit.

If you’re there for FaffCon3, and you’ve never been to a FaffCon before, you’re walking in unawares too….but you’ll walk out two feet off the ground.

Family commitments are preventing me from attending FaffCon for the first time…and I feel like I’ve lost my best friend.

Regular attendees know what I’m talking about.  Amy Snively has founded and ably sustained a great idea:  The VO “unconference”.  The camaraderie you absorb in attending various ad-hoc, and arbitrarily-concocted sessions is never forgotten.  As my friend Liz de Nesnera said after the original FaffCon in Portland, OR:  “All the FaffCon sessions are like the juicy hallway conversations you have at more formal conferences”!!

Since Amy has come to accept a second career as event organizer, she leaves no stone unturned in seeing to the finer details.  Most all that you expect, and the things you DON’T expect will all be present to enhance the experience, thanks to Amy.

Although I’ll be absent, I’ve contributed to the unconference in a way that I hope contributes to the fun.

TWO THINGS:

1)  For all you who enjoy tweeting from the unconference, please remember to use the #FAFFCON tag.  I hope to compile the messages later for people to benefit from.

2)  When you get back, please consider visiting my VOAToday.com site and sharing just one “nugget” you learned from someone else at FaffCon3, so others can learn, too.

Enjoy!

FaffCon Free Ride

Although I will be unable to attend the upcoming (3rd) FaffCon UNconference…you should know — first of all — that there’s a waiting list you can put your name on, and secondly, that there is still a scholarship available.

CC Heim wrote a reminder about this that first appeared on Bob Souer’s blog, and which I’ve reprinted below by request.

Thanks, Connor!

_______________

Over the past two years, a peer-to-peer voiceover UNconference known as Faffcon has taken on a life of its own. What’s an UNconference, you ask? An UNconference is a gathering of like-minded individuals who meet and discuss topics of interest. Sound sort of like a conference? Well, in some respects it is, in that folks register, attend sessions, network, eat. Stuff like that. But the biggest difference is that while a conference is typically structured with specific lessons that are predetermined and planned for in advance, an UNconference unfolds as it goes along, with participants determining the content they believe would be most useful for them during the weekend of the event. While it sounds rather unstructured, the concept works remarkably well.

Consider the most recent business conference you attended. What were the parts that really stood out to you? Was it a keynote speaker talking about some Big Thing? Was it a technical session that discussed how-tos with remarkable minutiae? Or maybe, just maybe, it was the time you spent in the lobby bar, chatting with a new friend about some really cool way he was drumming up new business/refining his performance approach/targeting new representation.

Let’s be honest – for many of us, the conversations held during the social part of industry conferences are the best takeaways. We make new contacts, chat about the industry often sharing “inside” information, and just generally enjoy having others around who can relate to our own professional journey. That’s what Faffcon is. One big chit-chat session. Granted, chit chat with focus. For instance, there may be a group chatting about mic technique, another chatting about how-tos of getting an agent, another chatting about personal websites… you get it.

So now you’re excited, and you want to go! But funds are tight, and that mortgage payment is really important. Well, we may have a solution for you. After Faffcon 2, many of the participants felt a strong urge to express thanks for all they received, and decided to do that by creating a scholarship fund. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the first two Faffcon events, it’s that participants are generous – with time, knowledge, and money! Lots of people pitched in, and before we knew it, we had 850 bucks in the kitty! So this fund is the direct result of your voiceover peers sharing their finances after enjoying a rich sharing of knowledge at the last event.

The Faffcon 3 scholarship is intended for a well-deserving voiceover professional, who may be a bit cash-strapped, but sees the value in this type of a gathering. The scholarship provides up to $850 to cover registration and travel expenses (see note below). Faffcon 3 is currently SOLD OUT with only one spot remaining – and that is for the recipient of this scholarship.

Don’t be shy! If you are a working voiceover talent who would not be able to financially swing it without the help of this scholarship, and really, REALLY want to attend Faffcon 3, I do hope you’ll apply. And I hope you’ll do it quickly because the deadline is August 15, 2011.

If the promise of one of the most amazing career-building events of your life is not enough, just remember: there will be chocolate. Lots of chocolate. Cheers!

(NOTE: The recipient of this scholarship will receive up to $850 in funds to cover air/rail travel, hotel room and registration fee. Actual amount to be awarded will be determined based on actual cost of these expenses. If these costs exceed $850, recipient will receive a full $850 and will be responsible for any costs over that amount.)

FaffCon Now Launching on Pad 3

You’ve heard about it…I know you have.

Either that, or you’ve attended FaffCon (the original) or Faffcon2, Electric Boogaloo.  In which case I’ve met you, ’cause I’m a FaffCon groupie, and have attended both.

Now FaffCon The Third is under construction.  It’ll take place in Hershey, PA, and yes, the festivities include a tour of the Chocolate Factory.

As before, the founding, binding, organizing and faffing force behind FaffCon is the inimitable Amy Snively.   Amy has become quite adept at this, her second career of event coordinator.  While the UN-conference clearly belongs to the attendees, Amy is the able facilitator and conscience of the event.

The format is free-form.  It’s not like any other voice over conference you’ve ever attended.  It’s rather impromptu, improvised, participatory, innovative, invigorating, and…oh yeah…lots of fun.

I’m not going to ramble on too much here about FaffCon.  It’s an idea whose time has come for our business, and each one seems to get better than the last.  Please visit the official site:  http://www.faffcon.com and get all the details, pics, schedules, facts, and answers.

No, I haven’t signed-up yet, but I will.  I always do.

See you there?

Good Sound Advice

Dan Friedman was a hit at Faffcon2.

His friendly style, and masterful knowledge of audio production greatly benefitted all those attending.

Dan works at ProComm Voices…so his resume speaks for itself.

But Dan’s been busy authoring, too, and has a new book release.

This easy-to-read, 84-page guide explains the finer points of good audio in terms any VO could understand.

The book is SOUND ADVICE: VoiceOver from an Audio Engineer’s Perspective…and right now  Dan is offering a chance to win a copy of the book.

If technical audio-chain hardware/software issues are not your strong suit, Dan’s book will take away the mystery.

Nice work, Dan!

Looking Towards Hershey

Now that FaffCon2 is a done deal, let’s take the truckloads of information, process, implement, and come back for more in September.

The sessions in Atlanta Sunday were again spectacular.  Smiles like the ones of Lisa Rice and Diane Merritt in this pic were not only ubiquitous, but genuine.  Friendships were made, solidified, and reinforced.  These fellow VO professionals comprise a network of help…a resource of referral…and a connection when the business seems so isolating at times.

A full day of sessions saw some repeats of valuable talks that not everyone heard earlier, some new or extended sessions, and plenty of sharing and relationship-building.  Those who had to leave said their goodbyes early, and many staying over another night gathered in one of the sites to watch the Oscars.

The next FaffCon is already set.  Amy Snively is becoming an expert at event-planning…something she explained to the 8 of us around the lunch table today.

So set your calendars now.  Hershey, Pennsylvania, September 23-25, 2011.  Plan for it.  There is probably no more exclusively career-building VO gathering on the planet.

Here We Go!

By the time you read this, FaffCon2 attendees will already have started arriving at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in downtown Atlanta.

As exciting as the first VO unconference was in Portland OR…I think this one has even higher expectations attached — probably because word got around about how great was Faffcon (the first).

Because February is an important ratings period on the TV news calendar…I won’t be leaving for George until AFTER the 11 o’clock news on Friday night…hopping a red-eye to a Houston layover, and arriving at Hartsfield International around 10:45.  (Who needs sleep anyway…I can sleep when I’m dead, right?)

I wish I could be there for the CNN tour…the early arrivals…smiles, backslaps, and Friday night over cocktails.  But I guess there’s something to be said for being a welcome late arrival, too.

Expect lots of tweets, FaceBook status reports, and blogs to surface in the next few days.  I’ll be doing my best to lay down some tidbits here and there, and blogging from my iPhone and iPad.  Just create a search right now on your Twitter interface (TweetDeck, Seesmic, etc) for #Faffcon.

You can probably expect to see lots of smiling faces and poses from the attendees before, during, and after the event…if you’re not coming.  Know that you are missed.  If you ARE coming…take copious notes before I get there, OK?

10 Things to Bring to FaffCon

Two weeks and two days to FaffCon2.

The time is upon us.

You are going…right?

Stop waffling…go the FaffCon.com site and register now.  Sure, you’ve missed out on lower incentive registration pricing…but it doesn’t matter.  You’ll walk away thinking you would’ve gladly paid twice that for what you got.

Now…there’s only been one FaffCon so far…and those few of us in attendance will tell you of the career-changing information shared, the intense networking available, and the new friends we  made.  But, one unconference hardly a tradition makes.  Everyone prepares differently for such things, so below is my humble list of suggested physical and spiritual baggage you may want to bring (or leave behind).

1) comfortable, casual clothes…favorite shoes…and clean underwear  :)

2) a digital camera, battery charger, extra SD card

3) an open mind

4) maybe something to write with, but more likely, something to record the sessions on, maybe even a video cam

5) your mobile DAW set-up, extra cords, power cables, pop-filter?, mic stand

6) cash for tipping the cabbie, buying CourVO a sandwich, or bribing Amy to mention your name

7) insatiable hunger to listen, learn, contribute

8) No-Doz… you can sleep when you die

9) Your Business Cards…lots of ‘em…and anything else promotional you want to give away

10) Ideas.  Session topics YOU may be able to lead.  You’ll be surprised how easy it is.

Honorable mention:  Laptop, iPad, iPhone, Android, or similar device to tweet, FaceBook and Social Media with.

There.  That’s easy, isn’t it?

C ya there!

FaffCon Live Event Feb 5th on Vokle

Don’t look at your calendar now…but FaffCon is exactly one month away!!

I hope you’ve already registered and made your room reservation, ’cause if you did, you may have the chance to have your room upgraded to a suite in a special live drawing on the web today (Saturday 1-29-11). Talmadge Ragan won that free upgrade.  Check back here on the 5th of February for another drawing!

Visit back here to see the live event in the viewer below, or go to Vokle.com to watch.

I’m not exactly who we’ll see on camera at 4 today, but I’m guessing Amy Snively will be involved somehow.

Not sure?  Not registered?  Not sane? (kidding!)  Visit the FaffCon site, look up ANY of the attendees from the first FaffCon, call or write them, and if THAT doesn’t inspire you, I don’t know what will!  This “unconference” is dynamite, career-changing, and community-building.

Simply awesome!
