Crafting Your Personal Brand

Wanna know why resources on the web about branding are never-ending?

1) New ideas come up every day.
2) New perspectives on old ideas come up every day.
3) People/companies change…and what works one day, won’t work the next.
4) There’s a lot of flailing around, and sometimes you just have to take calculated risks on things to see what sticks to the wall when you throw it out there.
5) What you can legitimately claim as your most marketable (branded) feature/service/product has evolved.
6) {and about a million other reasons…branding is a moving target}

For all those reasons and more…I will probably never stop posting and referring to great articles about branding….and this one is about as good as any I’ve read.

FaffCon Free Ride

Although I will be unable to attend the upcoming (3rd) FaffCon UNconference…you should know — first of all — that there’s a waiting list you can put your name on, and secondly, that there is still a scholarship available.

CC Heim wrote a reminder about this that first appeared on Bob Souer’s blog, and which I’ve reprinted below by request.

Thanks, Connor!

_______________

Over the past two years, a peer-to-peer voiceover UNconference known as Faffcon has taken on a life of its own. What’s an UNconference, you ask? An UNconference is a gathering of like-minded individuals who meet and discuss topics of interest. Sound sort of like a conference? Well, in some respects it is, in that folks register, attend sessions, network, eat. Stuff like that. But the biggest difference is that while a conference is typically structured with specific lessons that are predetermined and planned for in advance, an UNconference unfolds as it goes along, with participants determining the content they believe would be most useful for them during the weekend of the event. While it sounds rather unstructured, the concept works remarkably well.

Consider the most recent business conference you attended. What were the parts that really stood out to you? Was it a keynote speaker talking about some Big Thing? Was it a technical session that discussed how-tos with remarkable minutiae? Or maybe, just maybe, it was the time you spent in the lobby bar, chatting with a new friend about some really cool way he was drumming up new business/refining his performance approach/targeting new representation.

Let’s be honest – for many of us, the conversations held during the social part of industry conferences are the best takeaways. We make new contacts, chat about the industry often sharing “inside” information, and just generally enjoy having others around who can relate to our own professional journey. That’s what Faffcon is. One big chit-chat session. Granted, chit chat with focus. For instance, there may be a group chatting about mic technique, another chatting about how-tos of getting an agent, another chatting about personal websites… you get it.

So now you’re excited, and you want to go! But funds are tight, and that mortgage payment is really important. Well, we may have a solution for you. After Faffcon 2, many of the participants felt a strong urge to express thanks for all they received, and decided to do that by creating a scholarship fund. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the first two Faffcon events, it’s that participants are generous – with time, knowledge, and money! Lots of people pitched in, and before we knew it, we had 850 bucks in the kitty! So this fund is the direct result of your voiceover peers sharing their finances after enjoying a rich sharing of knowledge at the last event.

The Faffcon 3 scholarship is intended for a well-deserving voiceover professional, who may be a bit cash-strapped, but sees the value in this type of a gathering. The scholarship provides up to $850 to cover registration and travel expenses (see note below). Faffcon 3 is currently SOLD OUT with only one spot remaining – and that is for the recipient of this scholarship.

Don’t be shy! If you are a working voiceover talent who would not be able to financially swing it without the help of this scholarship, and really, REALLY want to attend Faffcon 3, I do hope you’ll apply. And I hope you’ll do it quickly because the deadline is August 15, 2011.

If the promise of one of the most amazing career-building events of your life is not enough, just remember: there will be chocolate. Lots of chocolate. Cheers!

(NOTE: The recipient of this scholarship will receive up to $850 in funds to cover air/rail travel, hotel room and registration fee. Actual amount to be awarded will be determined based on actual cost of these expenses. If these costs exceed $850, recipient will receive a full $850 and will be responsible for any costs over that amount.)

Friday Digest

‘Actually a couple of updates to some posts earlier this week.

First, from Wednesday:  I told you I was featured in a special book on small business entrepreneurs written by Internet Biz Coach Jim Kukral. The book has just been released and you can see a free offer when you click on Internet Marketing for Business Answers. (a completely no-cost copy of the audio book just by sharing the book on social media)

Here’s what Jim Kukral says about the contents:  “In this book you will learn the secrets of business from over 18 super-skilled ninja experts who talk about things like affiliate marketing, word of mouth, search, sales, podcasting, landing pages, making money online and much more. It’s the ultimate insider, private consulting session, all in one volume, to read at your convenience. Imagine spending over $50,000 to sit down and spend an hour with all of these people? That’s what this book is.”

My contribution is a podcast interview I did with Jim a few months back.  You can listen to that podcast.  You can also download a copy onto any Kindle app.

Yesterday hundreds of people read my blog on “8 VO Clichés We Love to Hate“, and several of you commented positively.  One person, though, wrote with an emphatic correction on item #5, having to do with Unions.  What was I thinking?  I might as well have excoriated a major national political figure…or railed against the eccentricities of one or the other of two popular computer operating systems (I think you know what I mean).

I don’t think the issue of talent unions can be brought up without the discussion reverting eventually to a full-out debate.  But I digress.

Noted VO Coach and voice talent Bettye Zoller took great exception to my summary judgement of union membership and said:  Dave this is WRONG WRONG. I have done many many national AFTRA SAG JOBS with fab residuals over the years and I am based in Dallas. I knoew so many people living everywhere in the U.S. from New England to Georgia to S. Carolina to Chicago who do union jobs, local, regional, or national. And that’s another item you are incorrect in saying: Only national work? OH NO. All work, even local, pays more on a union contract. And you NEED NOT JOIN A UNION TO WORK UNION. It is the PRODUCER/CLIENT/COMPANY who determines if it is a union job or not.”

I’ll be talking to Bettye about this, and may even ask her to guest blog, or at least maybe post a Q & A with her about this.

Finally, if you haven’t read Paul Strikwerda’s latest blog — after nearly a month’s-worth of social media silence, then maybe you should trot on over and read:  Egotistical Bastard.

8 VO Clichés We Love to Hate (…and why we could be dead wrong)

Do you know what “jaded” means?

It means:  “worn out or weary”…as in: we’re too close to VO, and so immersed in it the culture that we’re over-exposed to it.  We view as — tired — the very things that identify us to our non-professional audience.  Those identifiers become trite or cliché.

But are they cliché to the people we need in our work?…the clients, the prospects, the listeners?  Probably not.

Are they cliché to producers, agents, studios?  Maybe.

(Using my best Rod Serling imitation)
Submitted for your approval:

8 VO Clichés We Love to Hate (…and why we could be dead wrong)

1) NEVER use a microphone in your branding logo or on your website.  Really?  What is the first thing someone visualizes when you tell them you’re in voiceover?  Yup.  A microphone (or headphones…the 2nd most cliché image)  CourVO comes clean:  I don’t use one in my marketing materials.

2) EVERYONE TELLS ME I HAVE A GREAT VOICE…can I make it in voice overs?  The knee jerk answer is:  “It takes more than a good voice to make it in voice-overs.”   It’s a good answer…but let’s face it…Everyone’s FIRST reaction to Ted Williams was “he should be in voiceovers.”  A great voice WILL get you in the door…but without anything to back it up…you’ll not succeed.

3) Male VO’s have predominantly blues, browns, and blacks on their websites, and Female VO’s use predominantly pinks, purples, and pastels.  9 out of 10 times.  Seriously.  Go look around.  We all revert back to the colors of our infancy when we design VO websites.

4) More/Better equipment will not make you sound better.  Ahem…yes it will.  But…to be honest…only to a point.  So spend no more than $300 on a mic, and use the rest to build a better booth.  Your ROI is much higher.

5) You’ll never go anywhere in VO without being Union or have an Agent.  That’s only true if you have the singular focus of national radio/TV/promo/film work.  In which case you should add:  You have to live in L-A or NYC…and even that’s becoming more of a myth.  There comes a threshold where unions and agents become a serious consideration.  Until then it’s a wash…or not:  SAG/AFTRA talks could result in the most compelling argument yet for joining a union.

6) You must constantly stay COACHED. Well, the coaches would surely like you to believe this, and their is an undercurrent of this wisdom in almost every known profession.  But the bottom line is:  Are you getting work?  Are you staying busy?  Are you making enough money?  If so, then you’re probably OK….until the bookings stop.

7) No need to post a photo of yourself on your voice over website.  (see #8)

8) You must post a photo of yourself on your website.  (see #7)

Honorable mention:  Having ISDN will not bring you more jobs.  Yes it will… if you’ve lined up a bunch of ISDN jobs…your agent sends you ISDN work, you can afford it, and you’re in demand.  Accept all those caveats, and yes, ISDN will bring you more work.

Did I miss something?

VO Marketing, an Example

Creativity is a gift.  My gifts primarily lie in other areas.

For instance, I would’ve never had the vision to conceptualize Twitter, but I’m a machine at working it’s function.

I know this about myself…so rather than work creative angles at marketing, I work what works…and one of the things that works is relationship.

Over the years, I’ve curried a style that is welcoming.  I engage people.  I offer help.  I suggest connections. I enable, I start conversations.

Jim Kukral

One day when Jim Kukral walked into the room, I started a conversation.

Jim Kukral makes his living on the internet.  He’s a self-styled Internet Business Coach.  He consults.  He builds online promotions.  He’s a sort of hustler, but in a nice, virtual way.  He does videos, he instructs.  He was the first one to introduce thousands to the Flip-cam.

I’ve seen Jim speak at various conferences (BlogWorld Expo for one) in Las Vegas, and he is also a welcoming personality.  Eventually he asked me to be the subject of one of his many podcasts featuring entrepreneurs.  That was months ago, and I’ve had only sporadic contact with him of late.  Little did I know, I’d planted some seeds.

Did I mention Jim is also an author?  He is, and his latest book includes his podcast interviews with budding entrepreneurs.  Guess who made the final cut?  Yep.  Yours truly.

Now, I still have no proof that this exposure will directly lead to voice over jobs.  I hope Jim’s book sells a million, and I get lots of calls.  I know for sure it’s exposure to many many more different people than I would’ve reached in my normal marketing stream…and isn’t that one of the things you would hope for somewhere in your marketing plan?

Jim’s book gets announced today (I think).  I’m waiting for his final word to be able to publish the link, so check back.  In the meantime, here’s the link to the interview I did with Jim:

http://internetmarketingforbusinessanswers.com/internet-marketing-expert-interviews/

…and it all started with a conversation.

VooDoo vs. VO Do’s

voodoo-doll(THIS BLOG ORIGINALLY POSTED SHORTLY AFTER THE HAITI EARTHQUAKE, FEB 2010.  THE CONTENT DESERVES A REPRISE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS I’VE BEEN GETTING LATELY)

Maybe the mention of Haiti on the news so much has addle-pated my brain.

Maybe 4am is NOT such a great time to get to bed day after day.

Maybe it’s the odd shooting pains in my foot, neck, and eyes.

Whatever the reason, I’ve had this idea that won’t leave me alone, so maybe if I put it down on virtual paper, I’ll finally find relief.

‘So many illusions surround the business of voice-over.  To get a really – and I mean SOLID – grip on what lies ahead when you accept VO as a field of endeavour, you should certainly consult the excellent online publication that Peter O’Connell has authored called  “The VoiceOver Entrance Exam”.  It’s the long version of what I’m about to foist on you.

Below, you’ll find a short-hand version I concocted on my own called VooDoo vs. VO Do’s.

You’ll probably find that my little chart below is irreverent, a stretch, kinda kooky (honestly), but there are some “bones” of truth therein if you decide to chance a look.

Basically it follows the trail of VO development from start to finish, and whether you want to depend on Voodoo to succeed, or just “do” the right things from the start.

Let me know what you think.

Today’s Homework

What I’m about to tell you is top-secret, advance information, and you can’t tell anyone…OK?

In the next month or so, I’ll be teaming up with VO friends and fellow Social Media geeks Terry Daniel and Trish Basanyi for a series of three informational seminars.  We’re gonna cover the entire field of applicable Social Networking tools you should be applying to your VO business.

Terry is going to delve into FaceBook…Trish is going to examine Twitter, and I’ve got…well…the rest.  And that’s a lot.  I’ll be looking into YouTube, Google+, and blogging…plus I’ll have a special guest interview.  But most of all, I”m gonna focus on LinkedIn.

You know…Linkedin…the “other” social media site that just keeps consistently growing, serving its members, and making business connections on a grand scale.  Although there are thousands (yes, thousands) of VO talent on LinkedIn…I get the feeling that no one really wants to admit it, or no one really thinks it has value to their VO business.

It does, and I’m going to spend the better part of an hour talking about how.

But just in case you’re unfamiliar with LinkedIn…here’s your homework before the session gets here.

Click on the link taking you to 50 Intelligent LinkedIn Tips That Could Change Your Life.  Them’s big words, but really, the article guides you through the  basics, and attention to detail is the hallmark of a successful LinkedIn presence.  It’s about the best summary of LinkedIn tips (short of buying a book) I’ve seen.

So…there’s your assignment.  Read it.  You have a few weeks yet, but there will be a test (kidding!!!)

I’m not trying to be evasive about this big event, but I don’t want to jump the gun with the all-out marketing campaign we have planned for this threesome.

Just call this blog a HARBINGER.

Now, go do your homework, or there won’t be any supper for you!

CEO of ME

This blog is about a must-RSS site…and a great article ON that site.

The site is TNW. Heard of it? It stands for The Next Web.

Go there, and click on the RSS icon, and make sure it’s listed in your feed reader, then read it everyday.

Why?  Hey, you wanna get good at the Next Big thing right?  Then you gotta read The Next Web!  TNW is international in flavor, and in its own words, covers:  TECHNOLOGY NEWS, BUSINESS AND CULTURE.

Now, on to the useful article on TNW:  The CEO of ME: 10 Personal Online Branding Tips.  I write about branding and marketing a lot on this blog.  The most talented voice artist in the world will fail without self-promotion of some sort.

Why do I love THIS PARTICULAR article on branding?  I dunno…it’s got  nice pictures.  No, wait…it’s because it has 10 great points that are easy to understand, make sense, and can be implemented every day.  I personally like #3:  Communicate with Consistency, and #10: Bring Your Personality to the Table Every Time (that’s also true for your auditions, BTW).

Seriously… click here, and read this for 5 minutes.  It’ll be the most beneficial 5 minutes of your day.

To-Die-For Digest

You’ve heard me talk about it before, and you’ll see me use it plenty in the future:  STORIFY.  This amazing tool allowed me to publish the following digest of top VO resources from Social Media in about a half-hour, and post it for all to see in an easy-to-read format.  But forget all that, and just enjoy the looooong list of great stuff your friends and fellow VO pros are posting every day:
