NOV EQ Online Mag

EQ is a professional audio-industry periodical that is tops, as far as I’m concerned.

The target readership includes audio engineers, musicians, studio techs, and audiophiles…but so much of what is discussed…even the ads…land quite so close to the heart of a voice talent, that I believe each month’s digital edition is a gold mine.

You’ll find product reviews for hardware, mics, software, pre-amps, and peripherals, as well as tutorials for audio editing, and a whole lot more.

Plus this particular online digital form of the magazine is one of the slickest interfaces I’ve seen to browse a magazine, and still feel like you’re turning pages.

Oh, The Humility (or lack of it)

Almost exactly a year ago, I blogged about “Status Posting” Sharing or Show-Off?

A subsequent blog noted the responses, mostly in support of my position that it was more show-off than sharing.  “A Rainbow of Responses”.

I understand we all work in relative isolation.  Hey, believe me…no one enjoys the camaraderie between voice actors found in social media more than me.

I know we all work hard and are proud of our work, and love to hear the attaboys for a job well done.  Lord knows the clients don’t offer that…instead they pay us.

But the listing of the day’s accomplishments such as is circled above seems to me….///CUT..!!!!

OK, I won’t say.  I’ll just raise the question…what do YOU think?

(sorry for the crappy resolution of the graphic)  It says:  Recordings completed Thursday the 28th: station liners for Star 106 in The Bahamas, :30 Nalley Infiniti Spot, Mention Social Media Narration Presentation, Amazon Associate Pitch narrative, 6 Radio Opens for Compassion International, and an 8400 word Chemistry Course narration.

Wow. We should all be so lucky. The  person’s identity is shrouded in the captured FaceBook posting.  I’ve never met this person IN person.  I’ve exchanged a couple of emails…run into this person in online forums and discussions…and I know this person to be extremely accomplished, sought-after, experienced, seasoned, highly-professional, knowledgeable, living the VO life we would all aspire to, and a person who shares expertise when asked.  This person has ABSOLUTELY worked hard for achieving this kind of daily VO output.

All the more reason, I just do not get the chest thumping.

FeedBack Gold

Have you ever had a chance to take a Marc Cashman class?…or even work with him on a demo?  You should.  He’s one of the true seasoned pros in the business of VO.

The other day he did something ALL voice actors yearn for, but almost never get.  As the producer of a spot that went out for audition, he took the time to write a long, informational response to all the people who auditioned.

I don’t know if it was altruistic, or out of frustration for all the sloppy things VO’s do when they respond.  It doesn’t matter.  The entire email was feedback GOLD.

I’m excerpting-out the irrelevant stuff, and leaving the tips.  Promise me you’ll read through this…even though you may not have auditioned for this spot.

This is an abject lesson in:

1) listening
2) following directions to the letter
3) watching the details

VO Parasites

They are out there. And it seems one persistent outfit keeps burning his bridges to the point where soon, EVERYONE will know about his scammy operation, and we can put him out of business.

Terry Daniel writes in the FaceBook Group (VoiceOver Friends) this warning:

“Man, these guys love me lately!  I provided this clown a sample and then his credit card was denied.  Then, he said he would overnight a money order which never came and gave me a fake tracking number.  He’s looking to get radio imaging liners done for an Internet radio station and obviously for free.  He goes by the name of Jim and John!  I did get him on the phone and I was suspicious immediately.  The e-mail address he’s using is [email protected]  Just wanted to give you the heads up.  Beware!  :-)”

I’ve seen several notices about this operati0n (or one very much like it) over the last year.

Check out who you’re accepting work from…ask for money up front if you’re suspicious.

Local Voices

Voices.com is offering a new service as of today that puts you on the map.

The notice I got says it’s: “…a new program that’s designed to expand online exposure for your business and drive qualified traffic to increase your opportunities for voice over work.”

This certainly is consistent with latest social networking moves that take advantage of “location services”.  Think “4-Square”,  ”Loopt”, or “FaceBook Places”.  The service links to Google Maps and your Voices.com account to help create exposure for your business locally.

You can click on Voices.com’s “local Voices” link to get you signed up.  Then Google sends you a PIN and you’re off and running…hopefully augmenting your business.

If you’re a Voices.com member, you should’ve gotten this notice.

SEO.VO.OK?

Jodi Krangle presented at Voices of Vision on SEO.  Jodi did SEO marketing as a job, before finding her true place in life as a voice-actor…and Voices of Vision was a September Voice-Over Conference in Canada.

She makes her presentation available to all in her document:  Website Promotion For Voice Actors.

I’ve posted about this before, but just in case you missed it.  True gold in them thar words!

Thanks Jodi!

Road Essentials – Top 5

Did I mention I’m in Boise?  Lovely city.  One of the most active and vibrant downtowns in the nation.  And man, they love their Boise State Mustangs!

When I’m here, I stay at the Idaho Heritage Inn.  It’s a classy Bed & Breakfast with a real history.

Wherever I go, I take a mobile recording set-up.  Over the years, it’s gotten simpler and lighter.

Lots of people like the MicPortPro, and I must concur…it’s a lovely little unit for making any XLR mic a USB mic.  I have the MXL Mic Mate, a virtual clone.  Sadly, they don’t make it any more, but there are other alternatives if you want to check ‘em out.

K.I.S.S.

Simple is the key.  A mic, mic stand, mic cable, interface and a laptop.  If you have room to pack ‘em, you might add a pop filter or a sock.  Some are using an iPad, now, to read their copy.  I still use my iPhone or a Kindle.  Headphones are nice if you don’t want to wake the guy next door while you’re editing.

Harlan Hogan’s Porta-Booth Pro is a mighty fine accessory…very nice for keeping your sound from being hollow.  Personally, I really enjoy the challenge of making-do with what’s available.  Pillows, a chair, some blankets or towels.  Somebody should take a picture!

But it’s the little things that can make or break you.  Inconsequential, overlooked, taken-for-granted items that can absolutely ruin your session if you need them and don’t have ‘em.  They’re little in a literal sense, so it’s not a matter of having room.  It’s a matter of having them.

Here’s my top 5 in order of importance:

1)  3-prong adapter.  You know, the thingy you need when the room where you’re staying doesn’t have an electrical receptor with 3 holes? You’d think they’re everywhere, now, but they’re not (Idaho Heritage Inn a perfect example), and a laptop’s gotta have power.

2)  Converter plugs.  The kind that make your headphone plug bigger (1/4′ phone plug) or vice-versa.  I carry one of each…to make it bigger or smaller.

3)  AA and AAA batteries.  Sure, you can go down to the 7/11 if you REALLY need ‘em….but do you wanna pay $7.39 for two AA batteries?… and if you’re already in your pajamas…it’s a hassle.

4)  Swiss Army knife.  You should carry one all day 24 hours-a-day anyway.  I admit, I’m partial.  My dad taught me well.  He actually served in the Swiss Army.  Really.  Not kidding.

5) Redundant cords.  One extra mic cord, one extra USB cable with a rounded end, and one with a standard end.  Also an extension cord…oh!…and an extra set of those earplug headsets.  All the things in #5 together could fit in a coat pocket.

So that’s it!  Keep it simple.  Use available materials.  Take little essentials.  An extra USB “thumb” storage drive is nice too.
