FaffCon (yes, FaffCon)

FaffCon is fast coming.

Read THIS previous blog for the basics.  For those of you too impatient to do so, FaffCon is an “unconference” being organized by voice-actors FOR voice-actors, and it happens in September in Portland, OR.

From casual chatter, to catalyst, to serious planning, to scheduling and reality, this event took shape in what seems like a whirlwind of time.  Many many voice-actors have contributed, but probably none more so than the true force behind it all: Amy Snively, the event producer.

See below the line for an official PR release on FaffCon, but check out the video below for a fun video presentation of the upcoming event.  The video is populated by many of the people attending (moi included), and it was written, produced and edited by the highly talented Peter O’Connell.

If you’d like to come, though…better get on the stick…the special room rate at Hyatt Place Portland runs out on August 9th.  Everything you need is on the FaffCon site.

FaffCon – the First Ever Voiceover Unconference, Presented by Voicebank.net

The unconference concept comes to the working voiceover professional September 11-12, 2010 in Portland, Oregon USA. FaffCon, facilitated by Los Angeles-based voice actor Amy Snively, is a two-day ‘Open Space-style unconference with a participant-driven agenda. To keep the content relevant, registration is open exclusively to working VO pros (full or part time). Registration is $175, which includes two full days of topic sessions and lunch both days. FaffCon will be held at the new all-suite Hyatt Place Portland Airport and discounted rooms are available until August 9.

The name FaffCon comes from the word faff, which is UK slang for goofing off. General consensus from typical conference-goers is that the favorite part of a conference–where you have the most fun, learn the best tips, get the best leads, and make the strongest connections–is when everyone is just “faffing about.”

“We wanted to make a conference that was all just the best stuff,” said Ms. Snively.  “You know all the meaningful encouragement, startling epiphanies, and blinding flashes of genius you get when you’re hanging around with your brightest and most creative friends? That’s the idea behind FaffCon.”

The concept was instantly embraced by the voiceover business around the world, with many companies providing door prizes and sponsorships. FaffCon’s presenting sponsor is Voicebank.net, known as the service that “put the voice over industry online.”

“I’ve been to an unconference before and the concept is simple, yet ingenious,” said FaffCon attendee Connie Terwilliger. “There will be lots of great information exchanged, plus a chance to see people face-to-face – which, in our business, doesn’t happen very much anymore.”

There will be ten 50-minute breakout periods, each with multiple sessions to choose from, covering a wide variety of VO-related topics like:

-         Improving your VO improv

-         Making Bold Choices in Two Takes

-         Setting Rates: Get Paid Like a Pro

-         What’s My Signature Sound?

-         Making Adjustments that Matter: Taking Direction

-         Making Your Auditions Stand Out

-         Script Interpretation Roundtable

The final schedule of topics will be determined by the participants during the opening session, where they will be encouraged to follow one of FaffCon’s guiding principles: Get what you need; share what you can.
