‘Rehearsal’ iPhone App for VO?

You know I’ve written a couple of times about using your iPhone as a workable audition recording-and-sending device.  Most recently HERE on CourVO.biz.

Now, a new App is emerging with possible relevance to voice-actors.  It’s called “REHEARSAL’.

Watching the demo below, leads me to believe the target audience is mostly auditioning film, TV, or stage actors, but I suppose it’s functionality could apply to voice actors as well.

I have NOT check-out this app myself, but so far it’s free, and has a 2.5-star rating (although the developers go out of their way to apologize for early problems, and say it’s all fixed).

Click HERE for a look-see at their website.

  1. That developer apologizing profusely for early errors would be me, Dave!

You’re right – Rehearsal (now Rehearsal 2) is specifically designed for television and film actors to prepare for auditions and on-set work. But…I’m a member of Barbara Harris’ loop group, and when doing a day’s ADR work, we all take lunch and check our email for VO auditions that may have come in during the morning, then give each other quiet to respond to them.

One of the other actors in the group was desperately trying to figure out how to send audio to his agent from his iPhone one day, a day during the time that I was developing Rehearsal. Since I could, I added the ability to send recordings back to the requesting party (VO casting, agents, etc) as MP3s. The mic on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are remarkably good. You can’t edit with Rehearsal, so you’ll have to do one great take, but in a pinch, it’s a nice little feature.

And since most of us in LA that are active VO talent are also active on-camera talent, Rehearsal serves as a one-stop shop for both script rehearsal and VO audition creation.

I do appreciate you covering us – a lot has happened (all for the better) since April of 2010 when you wrote this – the biggest of which is Rehearsal 2 is now a simple paid app (you mentioned we were free, but actually it was a free trial, then a paid app after 30 days). Rehearsal was $20 a month, but now is $20 once for unlimited usage. You can also open PDF or Word scripts directly from the emails in which they arrive, and you can drag forwards and backwards in your recorded scenes.

We’re about to be featured in LA Magazine, and we’ve already been in FastCompany and The New York Times among others.

Thank you for your coverage! If people want the app for their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, they can get it at this link: http://rehearsaltheapp.com/download – and I welcome feedback, as we’re always trying to make it better for actors and VO people alike.
