Space-Book VO Job leads?

Have you noticed how the social-networking and portal web sites are trying even harder to be all things to all people these days?

Hi-traffic site SpaceBook is now screening jobs of all kinds.  Check this out.  (Am I way behind the curve on this, like I was with VEOH?)

Type "Voice-over", or "Voice-actor", or just "voice" in the dialogue box labeled  "Enter Job Title or Skills" and watch the page of results line-up….complete with sponsored custom ads at the top from the likes of Voice123, and individual voice-artists.

Hey, good luck with it….I only just found it, so I don’t know if these are quality leads or not, but I will probably be checking from time to time.

Let me know if you’ve gotten anywhere with it. OK?

Front-Running

Who can you trust these days?

You’d think Network Solutions, NetSol, a company that manages more than 7.6 million domain names, and was acquired by the quasi-governmental company SAIC in 1995, would have to hold up an ethical standard that is beyond reproach.

Apparently not.

NetSol is being accused of "Front-Running".  If you do a search for a domain name under their website, and determine that it is as yet untaken…then exit the website without reserving the domain name, NetSol is watching. The are reportedly holding back that name in reserve, and if you choose to return and purchase the domain name later…NOW you have to pay a higher premium.  Pretty nifty trick, huh?

See more in this article.

My thanks to Deirdre Cooper and her fantastic VO-BB for this hint.

VEOH

VEOH

Did everyone else already know about this site?

Is this the new YouTube?

Actually, no.  It’s more "…a one-stop shop for TV programming on the Web," according USA Today…  Uh, if it’s true, that’d be the Holy Grail of what’s been promised for years now — low-cost, quick, hi-quality commercial videos (TV shows and Movies) on your computer.

Check it out….’spretty good quality.

VOICE 2008

For the record:  I’m going to the VOICE 2008 event in August at the (smoke-free) Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.  Not only am I going…but I’ve been selected to be an MC/Introducer for sessions and presenters.

I was honored to be asked by James Alburger and Penny Abshire, and I take their invitation with a great deal of humility and understand it for the responsibility that comes with it.

As these events go, organizers often get caught in a chicken-or-the-egg Catch-22.  People won’t commit to attend until the line-up of presenters is secured.  But getting presenters is a tough sell if they know there won’t be a lot of people attending.

So….I’m attending. (not that it will sway a lot of votes).

Seems as if James and Penny are doing an admirable job of balancing the Catch-22.  They have a lot of good advance publicity, and a wonderful website that’s easy to navigate and packed with information. They’re well-organized, have a helpful staff, connections out the ying-yang, and much good cred from last year.

Their early line-up of presenters is impressive and includes Susan Berkely, Bob Bergen, Deb Munro, Mark Cashman, Mark Graue, Pat Fraley (maybe), Julie Williams, Nancy Wolfson, MJ Lallo, and many others.

I’m told the structure of the event will be much different from last year’s afffair.  The 2008 version will have more break-out sessions which lends itself to a lower teacher-to-student ratio for sure, but will prompt you to have to make a decision sometimes about conflicting classes.

I’ve had many VO-BB’ers ask me about whether I was going…. they constituted a strong core of last year’s sessions.  Well, I am… but with a few misgivings.

First, Frank Frederick will not be a part of this event.  Frank is my mentor, a dear friend, and was a partner in last year’s VOICE. For reasons WAY beyond the scope of this blog, he is not a part of VOICE 2008. Frank was principal in my being chosen as last year’s MC, and for that I’ll always be indebted.  Frank is planning an event of his own, and when it announces.  I’ll be THERE.

Second, VOICE 2008 goes even further from a central location by choosing LA as it’s home for ’08.  That’s understandable.  SoCal is at the center of James’ and Penny’s client and presenter-base, and LA could arguably be called at the top — if not THE top — of the Voice-Acting industry.  Presenters like that, ’cause it means they can sleep in their own beds at the end of the day. But travel to the West Coast may push the budget for many on the voice-over rich East Coast.

Third, There’s been considerable kibitzing about how this is an event for beginners, not serious voice-actors.  I’m not sure that’s true.  Regardless, people need to make their decisions whether to attend for a whole host of reasons, and if the schedule appears a little to light for you there are many other "advanced" events through the year…I hear from a fellow VO-BB’er that Dan O’day is scheduling a session that same weekend as VOICE 2008.

Fourth, Cost is always a factor. As those things go…James and Penny have made this about as affordable as is feasible, I believe. ‘Course there’s the cost of travel and meals and a room.  Again, everyone needs to make the decision whether it’s right for him/her based on a number of priorities.

Fifth,  I’m so far unimpressed with any mention of hardware/software or subscription voice services being in planned attendance in any significant presence.  That may be in the works yet…but it may influence some whether or not to come.

Overall, I believe this event offers a singular opportunity for networking, learning, being exposed to some of the true experts in the field, and a chance to get to know many of the other people who mostly work in voice-over isolation in different parts of the world.

We ARE a community, and this is a wonderful chance to get-together for some fun, too.

Mark me…a VOICE 2008 Attendee!

Success…of sorts (progress, at least)

Most people hate hardware/software hassles…I do too…but there’s a part of me that relishes the quandary.  Partly ’cause I like the challenge (you know…the computer is the game), and partly ’cause I know I’ll learn something valuable in the process.

Such is true in the case of my current Pro-Tools/M-Audio issue.

First of all, I’m finding that there are a lot of friends, and even some strangers, who are going out of their way to help.  I’m resolved to do more of that with others in the future, when I can contribute.

Secondly, I’m drawing ever-so-close to a solution, and I AM learning a lot about how things work.

I stumbled upon a perfectly fine work-around solution by mistake…creating a new user profile on my current machine that runs Pro-Tools 7.4 just fine.  Very stable. WITH the brand-new M-Audio drivers that I was SO CONVINCED were the problem.

Mind you, if I go back to the old profile, and try to run PT…I still get the crash, so I’m not sure what it is about a new user profile that doesn’t include the offending conflict, but I’m grateful.  ‘Seems to me most all of the programs installed under the NEW profile are also present on the previous user profile… so I guess it’s going to be important for me to find out what difference there really IS.

When I turned off "automatic restart" under Control Panel –> System…then crashed my computer on purpose with PT under the bad profile, I get a stop error message pointing to TPkd.sys…which is presumably the conflicting driver.  It’s located under c:\windows\system32\drivers.

Anybody heard of this file?  Anybody know how I can find out what program is associated with it?  I think this is probably what’s doing it.

So there you have it:  desperation matched with determination, a little panic, lots of help from friends, unexpected diligent help from DigiDesign, and a portion of luck = a solution (I think).

Hopefully my next blog on this will bring termination to this saga.

Pro-Tools/M-Audio SNAFU update

The latest on my struggle with my computer crashing when I launch Pro-Tools with the M-Audio interface:

I went home late last night, and hooked into the system my newly-purchased M-Audio Mobile Pre USB.  I did all the proper uninstalls of old programs, and re-installs of new drivers, etc…pausing to reboot ad nauseum in-between.

The ‘puter still crashes.

So, now, at least I know it’s not the M-Audio "connection" that’s causing the crash.

Through this all…even with my snide comments… the DUC and DigiDesign on-line e-mail support has remained cool, and insisted I follow their preferred method to troubleshooting this thing.

I’m starting to see the wisdom of that.  Their DigiDesign website is VERY deep with helpful support and troubleshooting.  They obviously provide a lot of support for their many hardware/software issues.  I just wish some of it was working.

I continue to work on this problem, and the next step is to provide a more complete rundown of what software/hardware basics I have installed on my DAW.

More later….good or bad.

Play Nice!

Tell me if this is getting tedious, but the latest on the Pro-Tools/M-audio interface failure is that there IS no progress report.

I’m getting some feedback from Digidesign, but the boys in tech support basically told me to play by the rules and follow their protocols to nail-down the problem.

I understand that (scientific method and all), but before I get into the esoterics of chipsets, motherboards, and processors…I’m gonna plug in a brand-new M-Audio unit I just purchased to see if that clears up the problem.

If so, I’ll know it’s not my computer, but the M-audio unit.

I do enjoy the challenge of piecing together jigsaw puzzles…. but I can’t seem to find the picture on the top of the box.

Stop the Presses!

Did you know it’s National Pet Dental Health Month!?  Click here for more!

It is, actually, but that has very little to do with voice-overs (although it does seem a disparate proportion of voice-actors seem to have dogs…going by avatars, alone, I mean)

Uh, the latest on my saga with Pro-Tools and M-Audio descending into a spectacular crash of my computer continues.

I am awaiting a call from a Digidesign product specialist out of LA to call me back.  That was a gift from Frank Frederick who noticed his name in VoiceOVer Savvy, the forum sponsored by Voices… and referred me.

‘Turns out the guy is a budding Voice-actor like many of us who frequent these sites.  He has the added plus of working for DigiDesign…now THAT is a leg-up!

‘Got a clean lead off the internet today.  When somebody calls me in Las Vegas from Boston… it’s probably not because of the flyers I posted on the local streetlight here.  When I asked, he said he saw my Google AdClicks add on the right side of the page when he googled "voice overs".

YES!!!

Many thanks to quite a few people who have responded with offers of help, links, FAQ’s and other suggestions to assist in my quandary over the Pro-Tools/M-Audio issue.
